Direct Cremation Services

Direct Cremation Services - how do they differ from traditional cremation? The main difference is in the timeline: when opting for a direct cremation service, from the time your loved one passes, until they are returned to you as ash, family will not have the opportunity to have viewings. Services such as these are useful for when a family does not want too much ceremony surrounding the death, and additionally they cost a lot less - easing the financial burden is the least that we at Lagoon View can do in times like these, when the burden of loss is already heavy upon you and your family.

Direct Cremation

Some like the idea of being sent off to the next life in accordance with tradition - others do not want to bother with the formality, and would rather a simple, hassle-free, cheap service so that little fuss is made and everyone afterwards can get on with their lives, avoiding the potential upset that traditional funerals may create. That is Direct Cremation’s most significant benefit. Additionally, it prevents the body of the deceased from lying idle and becoming a sanitation hazard - better in certain cases to simply get things moving and deal with the situation quickly for the satisfaction of everyone involved. Our Direct Cremation Services, as well as our standard Cremation services give you and your family a chance to say goodbye to your loved ones in a much more relaxed, informal environment than that of standard or traditional funerals. Another benefit is that the money that would have been spent on funeral expenses can instead be left to the family to help out during this difficult time.

Questions & Answers

How soon can I collect the ashes?
Once all funds are paid in full, the ashes of your loved one are usually available in about two working days after the service.

Can ashes be divided up?
Yes they can. This is optimally discussed with Lagoon View at the time of the arrangement so that we can inform the chosen crematorium of your wishes. We also need notice of this so that we may get started on the paperwork that is required if any of those portions are intended to be sent overseas.

Burying/scattering of ashes:
There are certain restrictions as to where ashes may be dispersed or disposed of. All regional and local authorities have procedures in place for the interments of ash in their respective cemeteries. Alternatively, the ashes may be scattered at a place of significance to you and your loved one. In all cases barring the ownership of said significant place by the family of the deceased, the landowner’s, local iwi or other relevant authority’s permission should be sought out. There is a strict prohibition over the scattering of ashes in places such as fishing grounds or other rivers and lakes, as these are traditional food gathering sites for the local iwi. We, as experienced purveyors of cremation funeral services, can help facilitate permission from the various interest groups or organise interment in traditional cemeteries.

What is legally involved in the cremation process?
The legality of facilitating a cremation requires different procedures from those needed for a burial. Mainly, the certifying doctor has to have seen the body after death – they have an additional form to complete for the local cremation authority. This, as well as an application for cremation which is filled out by the near next of kin at the time of arranging the funeral, is submitted to an independent medical advisor or referee – (by your funeral director) – so as to obtain a legal ‘Permission to Cremate’ authorisation.
